Formed in 1977 by Leeds University students Jon King (vocals), Andy Gill (guitar), Dave Allen (bass), and Hugo Burnham (drums), Gang of Four produced some of the most exhilarating, inspiring and lasting music of the early English post-punk era of 1978-1983. The group released four trailblazing, politically informed punk-funk albums, including 1979's critically acclaimed "Entertainment" and 1981's "Solid Gold". Combining smart, sarcastic lyrics that targeted social and political issues with tough, angular and discordant punk rock, Gang Of Four created army of followers and respecters of their work. It was a fresh sound that has been much copied but never bettered. Gang of Four's original members recently reunited after more than twenty years to undertake a world tour which culminated with the release of the album of newly recorded versions of their old songs "Return The Gift" (2005). The music of this cult British group inspired a lot of great bands (U2, R.E.M., Rage Against The Machine and Red Hot Chili Peppers) and furthermore, their influence is getting even bigger today especially on a recent crop of popular and exciting exponents of the modern rock scene: LCD Soundsystem, Franz Ferdinand, Radio 4, !!!, Rapture, The Rakes, Futureheads etc. They have always remained one of the most important bands in the history of rock music.
