Mercedes Peon samplers, electronic bagpipe, clarinet, Galician percussion, vocals
Mercedes Peon has spent most of her life exploring the traditional music of Galicia. A singer of strength and passion, she is also an expert bagpipe player and percussionist. In 1990, after years of study, collecting, teaching and experimenting she released her first album, Isue, which brought her immediate recognition at home and abroad. Weaving guitars and electronic sounds around the almost forgotten vocal styles gave many Galicians a new look at their own culture. Her one-woman shows are a tour-de-force, ranging from unaccompanied singing to skillful use of sampling technology to sing and play bagpipes and percussion all at once. In addition to performing she runs the Discotrompo label, promoting Galician traditional and folk music and organizes festivals. A major force in the continuing development of Galician music.
